The secret life of a CPA
Now, beyond the challenge of qualifying as a CPA while working and bringing up teenage kids, May is excited about a future committed to exceptional and personalised taxation and accounting services.
With 20 years’ experience in accounting and business, May revels in communicating with people from many backgrounds and such diverse cultures.
Exceeding clients’ expectations is her most important goal.
May Shen was born in China and worked at Intel (China) Co. before heading to Australia in 1999. She and her husband ran various small businesses, which evolved into a passion for helping other business owners with their accounting and taxation needs.
She completed the CPA program in 1.5 years at Swinburne University and worked for H&R Block and a Melbourne CPA firm, before opening the MAS Tax Accountants office at South Yarra in March 2015.
An average day as a tax accountant involves Professional Development as a part of the daily routine. Updating skills and knowledge, like the new cloud-based systems and tax reforms, is a challenge May enjoys.
Networking is another vital task because, in the ‘people business’ of taxation and bookkeeping, resourcefulness and good connections are very important.
What they don’t teach you at University
As the business owner, May wears several hats. She contributes to marketing, sales and operational systems and helps plan strategically for the firm’s future. Here is a creative example of her local network where a Toorak Road sushi store promotes her business, and she sends refers her clients in to them in return.
What May loves most about working as an accountant in South Yarra is being opposite South Yarra Train Station.
“We always have exciting new clients coming on board” May says.
“It’s a great location – an action hub.
We are working with people from very diverse backgrounds and always learning something new from our clients and our neighbourhood.”
